The BC Association of Farmers' Markets is putting on a province-wide selfie contest. The contest involves taking a selfie at a farmers' market and posting it up to the contest page on Facebook.

The contest ends July 7, so this Saturday will be the only opportunity left to take a selfie at the Cranbrook Farmers' Market.

Erna Jensen-Shill, market manager for the Cranbrook market, said they are encouraging everyone to come down to the market and snap a shot of themselves.

"We are participating in Cranbrook," Jensen-Shill said. "Lots of people have their favourite vendors, or they just want to take a picture of themselves and their friends."

Jensen-Shill said the basic intention of the contest is to put out a social media invite for people who may not have been to the market yet.

"To give them a picture of what's happening at the market, what sort of vendors there are and showcasing the great locally made, baked and grown vendors at the market," she said.

"The carrot on the stick, if you will, being some great prizes being available."

Those include home canning kits and some gift certificates to spend at the farmers’ market.

“So some great incentives to encourage people to get down there and snap a selfie at the farmers’ market,” she said.

Aside from the markedly digital contest, she said the farmers’ market is also a place to reconnect with people in the real world.

“Because people do at their essence really like to connect face-to-face with other people and meet the people who are growing their food or making the products that they’re buying,” she said. “At the heart of that is a real essence of being human, so I just think that the popularity of farmers’ markets will continue to grow as people hear about them. We’re getting a better and better response as people hear about it.”

The next Cranbrook Farmers’ Market is Saturday, July 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 10th Avenue South in downtown Cranbrook.
