On April 17, about 60 people gathered on the forested grounds of Recovery Ranch Treatment Centre to witness the Ktunaxa flag raising ceremony.

Recovery Ranch (previously Top of the World Ranch Treatment Centre) is a medically supervised, holistic addiction treatment centre specializing in evidence-based treatment for concurrent addiction and mental health disorders.

The Suʔkni Singers drummed and sang, followed by speakers ʔaq̓am Nasuʔkin (Chief) Joe Pierre Jr., Sophie Pierre, Diane Whitehead, (Ktunaxa Nation Council Social Investment Sector), Walter Felitsyn, Director, Clinical Operations at East Kootenay Long Term Care, Jamie Jenkins, Executive Director of East Kootenay Addiction Services Society, and Carlee Campbell, from EHN Canada (Recovery Ranch).

“Recovery Ranch is more than a service provider; they are our collaborators in the journey towards holistic well-being,” said Diane Whitehead, who is Ktunaxa Nation Council’s Outreach Supervisor/Intake Coordinator. “They work hand in hand with us and recognize the unique challenges and strengths that come with addressing mental health and addictions. Through open communication, shared resources, and mutual understanding, we aim to foster an environment where healing is a collective effort.

“Mental health and addictions affect every community. The collaboration between Recovery Ranch and the Ktunaxa Nation is a testament to the power of unity in facing these challenges. By sharing our story, we hope to inspire conversations around destigmatizing mental health, showcasing the strength found in collaboration, and highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to healing.”
