SURREY — Tracy Lasorsa-Simon, the wife of retired BC Lions all-star receiver Geroy Simon, has died, according to a post on the football team’s website.

Lasorsa-Simon lived in the Cloverdale area in the Lower Mainland, and her husband works for the CFL squad at its headquarters in Surrey’s Whalley neighbourhood.

“It is with deep and profound sadness the BC Lions Football Club today reports the passing of Tracy Lasorsa-Simon, wife of Geroy Simon, the club’s director of Canadian scouting,” the team posted on its website today (Sunday).

The cause of death was not made public by the team.

“We are devastated at the news of Tracy’s passing and we ask that you keep the entire Simon family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” said VP of football operations, GM and head coach Wally Buono in a statement.

“Tracy has been part of the BC Lions family for more than a decade, and her loss is heart-breaking for all of us.”

The Simon family has requested privacy at this time, the club stated.

Last August at a backyard event in the Port Kells area of Surrey, Simon and his wife were among those celebrating the final concert performed by the Canadian band The Tragically Hip. Partygoers watched the band perform on a big screen, in a concert televised nationally from Kingston, Ont.

The game of football was a common bond among many of those at the event, through the program at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Cloverdale.

The Now-Leader talked with Simon that evening, for a story that appeared the following week.

“I don’t know all of the band’s songs,” said Simon, an American who grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, “but my wife sure does, because she’s Canadian.”
