The City of Cranbrook is gearing up to deliver garbage carts to residents in early May, which is shifting to an automated collection program similar to the blue bin recycling program.

Between May 9 and May 24, 2024, the City’s contractor will be delivering one, 240 litre wheeled cart, free of charge, for garbage to each residential household, along with an information guide.

If anyone had requested a smaller 120 litre garbage cart, it will be directly delivered to their household.

Each cart is tagged and has its own serial number that is connected to each household. The city says carts are to remain with that particular household or property and that residents who move to a new property leave the garbage and recycling carts and do not take those with them.

The garbage collection cart will be delivered to the end of residential driveways or walkways.

City staff is asking people to move and store the carts in a secure area, such as a garage or backyard, until collection day.

If households haven’t received a cart by Monday, May 27, 2024, notify the City through 311.

With the move to automated garbage collection, the weekly pickup schedule will remain the same, while recycling will continued to be collected bi-weekly.

The City is scheduled to officially begin residential automated garbage collection services on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Any garbage placed out for collection on, or after June 3, should only be in the curbside garbage collection cart and placed at the curb for collection.

Additional garbage will not be collected.

More information on the city’s automated garbage collection program is available on the city’s website.

There you will find more information about the overall automated garbage collection program including pickup schedules, cart information and proper cart placement, and a series of frequently asked questions.
